March 2007 Newsletter

MEETING: The meeting was held on March 6, 2007 at 7:00 pm.  Reports were given on advertising, activities and scholarships.  Constitution/By-Law changes were discussed, voted on and passed.  Purchasing a CD at Bank of America at a higher interest rate was discussed, voted on and accepted.

CONSTITUTION/BY-LAW CHANGES:

The changes to the Constitution-By-Laws were brought to a vote before the membership and passed by a 26-14 margin.  The official document will be copied and sent soon.  Until then, please use the document you received with last month’s newsletter.

**IMPORTANT – READ CAREFULLY: There will be a discussion and vote on the following proposed Constitution/By-Law changes at the April 3, 2007 meeting.

Proposed changes to Constitution/By-Laws

The following changes (in bold) are proposed to the Constitution/By-Laws. Both are in Section I. Name and Purpose.

The first one added to the end of 2-A. reinforces the club purpose in the club Articles of Incorporation which is “To provide scholarships in the automotive technology field to worthy high school students”.

The second one added to the end of 3. Helps clarify who would distribute the club assets if the club were to dissolve or liquidate. The club Articles of Incorporation state “In the event of a voluntary dissolution, the club assets will be distributed as follows: Distribute all net assets in the form of scholarships to students.

2. The purpose of this organization will be:

A. To conduct an organization for the purpose of providing automotive (definition; having to do with automobiles) technical school scholarships for high school graduates. This cannot be changed without a 100% vote of the entire membership.

3. The net income and principal of this organization, in the event of dissolution, or liquidation, will be applied to the Automotive Scholarship Fund or charities and will not work to the private benefit of, or be distributed to any private individual or person(s). The “Trustees” and the Board of Directors mutually will assume these responsibilities.

DINNER OUT/EATING OUT:  This month, we didn’t have Dinner Out…instead we had Lunch Out.  Twenty of us gathered at a new place called The Filling Station in Federal Way on Sunday, February 25.  The food was good, but the seating arrangement wasn’t the best.  We will try to see that the seating is better in the future.

Because of numerous issues discussed at the last meeting, eating out wasn’t brought up.  After discussing locations with a few members, we decided to have it at the Normandy Park, Park Place Bar and Grill.

This is the new place that has placed our license plate and some of the member’s car pictures on the wall in the lounge.  We will try lunch again on Sunday March 25 at 2:00 p.m. (that seemed to work best for most everyone.  The address is 17821 1st Ave S, Normandy Park.  If you want a picture of your car on the wall, bring a 8x10 picture to the lunch.  They will provide a frame. Please call me or Marcia (206) 763-1314 if you can be there.  The restaurant part closes at 2:00 pm. But will seat us in one area of the lounge.  Their chef/cook has agreed to work over just for us.  They also hope to have their back parking lot completed in case it’s a nice day and we want to drive our cars.  Marsh & I have eaten there and the food is good and prices reasonable.

BOWLING:  We are finished with the third quarter and are headed into the fourth and final quarter.  Congratulations to Vicki, who bowled a 247 with her handicap, and if Marcia didn’t have bad luck, she wouldn’t have any at all.  She had a 7-10 split three times in a row.

NEW HOT RODS:  Bill and Tricia Speer purchased a cherry ’49 Plymouth – what a beauty!  Bob & Val Merriman just purchased a 1965 GTO convertible.  Can’t wait to see it.  Marcia and I just purchased a 1963 T-Bird that needs some work and TLC…hopefully enough to keep me out of trouble, but that’s doubtful!  Speaking of hot rods!  Dave & Judy Michalski were asked to have their car in the annual car show held at Qwest Field.  Unfortunately they were asked with too short of notice to get their car ready.  What an honor guys!!  Congratulations!

SCHOLARSHIPS:  Bob Merriman reported that a high school student designed the poster for scholarships.  The poster and scholarship information were given to all appropriate high schools.  The completion date has been extended to April 21, 2007 with the recommendations to be given to the membership at the May meeting.  Auto shop teachers and students at the schools are really excited.  The next Scholarship Committee meeting is at Bob Merriman’s home on March 14 at 7:00 pm.

COATS AND APPAREL:  I checked with Superior Raceway Products on March 5 and the jackets paid for at February’s meeting and due to production problems should be ready by the end of the month.   We are still checking for better prices on hats and summer jackets.  Dugan’s has the best price on T-shirts at $6.45/ea for the club.

June brought samples of magnetic I.D. badges to be worn on shirts.  No pins to put holes in clothes.  These looked great and could also have “dangles” hooked on them showing whatever a person wanted. i.e. type of car, type of membership, such as president, trustee, etc.  She will bring a sample of a Street Rats badge along with prices to the April meeting.

ADVERTISING:  Our club events are now posted in several places.  We are in the “2007 NW Car Clubs Events Calendar”.  This booklet of events is mailed all over Washington, Canada, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon.  We are on the “Old timers” Calendar of Events and the “2007” Northwest Automotive Events Calendar” as well as on the pullout event calendar of “Cruzin'” plus a ¼ page ad in the “Cruzin' Magazine”.

EVENTS:  Teresa went over upcoming events. Friday-Night Cruise Ins can no longer be held at the Fred Meyer Parking Lot in Covington. has talked to the manager at Wal-Mart in Covington and it looks like we will be able to hold it there.  There are a few loose strings that have to be tied up and will be reported at the next meeting.  If we can hold it there, we will need a large banner to place on a container in the Fred Meyer Parking lot to show our new location as well as signs on the sidewalk advertising where the cruise-in is.  Bob Merriman and Vicki have volunteered to drive the trailer to Friday night cruise-ins and Lyle is in charge of the event. Teresa, Tim, Vicki and Ray have met with the Maple Valley Days committee and they are happy we are going to be there again.  They have asked that we be there both days.  More to be discussed at the next meeting.  They have attended quite a few meetings at Mt Si and that event is coming together also.  Teresa has a few volunteers but needs more.  Steve Holt has volunteered for parking; Val Merriman is in charge of goody bags, Bob Merriman and Lars have volunteered to be in the trailer with Vicki, Debbie and Marcia volunteering at the raffle tables.  We still need help with raffle items, goody bags, set up and clean up.  .We also need items for goody bags and raffle items.   If you can’t help all day at the events, maybe you could help for a couple of hours at one or the other doing something.  ANYTHING will be appreciated.  Again, for Friday-night cruise in, contact Lyle and for Maple Valley Days and Mt. Si Festival, contact Teresa.  It really isn’t hard work gang, just some of your time.

**IMPORTANT - TROPHIES:   Ehren Atkinson is asking if anyone has car parts, large (within reason…no engine blocks) or small.  If you have any bring them to the next meeting.  He needs these in order to make more trophies.

NEW MEMBERS:  WELCOME to new members John Kinyoun (1970 Chev pickup and a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner), Frank Adams (1932 Ford Cabriolet), and Don Glenn (1964 Corvair and a 1962 Corvette) all from Maple Valley.

FROM THE PRESIDENT: Another month another dollar (NOT, I’m retired) Vicki and I have  been really busy doing scholarship and activity committee chores, of course we did slip in a week or so to go to Las Vegas, Disneyland and then on to San Diego for an old car tour. Nothing like cruising California beaches in a friends 1908 touring car. It was a blast!!

Sounds like Wal-Mart is serious about letting us have our Friday night cruise-ins in their parking lot. One hang up is the fire dept. may require us to supply two people to keep our old car guests from driving around the back and far side of the store in the fire lane. Wal-Mart may offer us a barbeque cart (they cook and keep any profits) or we can supply our own facilities and cook (we keep the profits). Also they may offer matching funds for our donation bucket. So far so good (maybe). Fred Meyers also has said if we can wait a month or so we could use their lot again. Wal-Mart is only for 14 nights a year.

If you were at the last meeting you know there was some heated discussion. I’ m sure I could have handled it better. If there are any hard feelings give me a call and I will apologize!  Bryan Roehr, Roger Bozell (past club presidents) myself (current president), Doug Julson, Vice President, and Vicki Markley, Secretary met to see if we could get some harmony in the club. It turns out there wasn’t that much disagreement. Part of the club was concerned about the club drifting away from its focus on scholarships. This was easy to hammer out because the Articles of Incorporation already covered it. We agreed to add the 100% vote so all will be able to see we are serious about being dedicated to scholarships. The other change is to help clarify that if the club is ever dissolved the club Trustees would like to have a say in how it is done, and this is only fair! See the enclosed additions to the by-laws. Fun, Cruising and Harmony here we come!

KUDOS:  Thanks to Harold Shamblin for volunteering the use of his sandblaster to Ehren so he is able to clean the trophies before painting.

50/50 DRAWING:  Won by Teresa.   She took home $78 and the club received $78.  Hmmmmmmmm???

NEXT MEETING AGENDA:  Club events, badges, apparel and voting on the amendment to the Constitution/By-Laws.

NEXT MEETING:  Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Henry’s Switch Restaurant at Lake Wilderness Golf Course.  The meeting starts promptly at 7:00 p.m.; however, a lot of people show up at 6:00 p.m. to have dinner first.
