May 2007 Newsletter

LAST MEETING: The meeting was held on May 1, 2007 at 7:00 pm with 41 members present.  Reports were given on activities, scholarships and clothing.

Proposed By-Law change:  (Required by IRS for club to be a 501 C3 charitable organization) Change Section I paragraph 3 to read as follows: In the event of dissolution of this organization the assets shall be distributed for one or more exempt purposes within the meaning of section 501 (C) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code or corresponding section of any future federal tax code. Such as to a public school automotive technical program, an automotive technical school scholarship fund, and/or to a local government to benefit high school technical class students.   (Be prepared to vote on this at the June 5th meeting)

DINNER OUT/EATING OUT:  Twenty-four attended lunch at Ixtapa Mexican Restaurant in Carnation on Sunday, April 22.  After lunch, most of us cruised to the Triple XXX in Issaquah for root beer floats or ice cream sundaes.  Lots of fun and laughs.  This was our last one since the Friday night cruise-ins and shows start once again for the summer.

FRIDAY NIGHT CRUISE-INS:  HOORAY!  Friday Night Cruise-Ins are back!!!!!  Our first Friday Night Cruise-in of the summer at the Wal-Mart parking lot in Covington was not bad considering the skies were cloudy, it was chilly and we had a couple of cloud bursts…one at the end completely dumped on us and we got saturated!  We ended up with 40 cars including club members.  However, this past Friday was a huge success.  We ended up with 130 cars NOT including club members.  There were about 15 of us club members there with our cars.  People were finding us, several people said this was a much better spot than Fred Meyers and we had lots of the public coming in to look.  We did have generator problems so we need to have ours looked to see if it can be fixed or we need to purchase another one.

Some of us went to the Iron Grill to eat afterwards and the owners gave us a gift certificate to raffle off at the next Friday night...there was a stipulation however…he wants a ride in one or more of our cars.  We told him NO PROBLEM!

MAPLE VALLEY DAYS:  It’s almost here guys…we need everyone to pitch in to make it a success.

HELP!!!! We still need convertibles for the Maple Valley Parade to carry dignitaries for their 10th anniversary of Maple Valley Days.  Anyone out there willing and able to drive their convertibles or know someone who has one and would drive it in the parade, let Teresa know?

All trophies for Maple Valley Days have been sold, but it would sure be great if we had more sponsors.  Ehren has 9 of the trophies made and sandblasted.  He is still working on getting the others complete as well as getting them all painted.

BOWLING:   Yowser, Yowser!!!!!  Val Merriman picked up a 7/4-10 split a few weeks ago.  Fantastic, job Val.  Just don’t go professional on us and forget about cars!  This bowling season is over; however a few members are bowling in the spring race car league.  The Flatheads (Bob & Val Merriman and Marcia Julson) took 3rd place.  Debbie Veenhuizen took top women’s series and Nancy Atkinson took top women’s handicap series.  Good going Rats!

WEBSITE:   Lars has had to do several changes to get our web site running again.  Don’t know if hackers are involved or what!  The new website address for the time being is www.maplevalleystreetrats.com.  Eventually everyone will be able to access it either by using either .com or OR .org.  Thanks, Lars.  Nice job!

LEADS & NEEDS:  We hope to make this an addition to the newsletter.  Anyone who has leads on cars, car parts or has a need for car parts, or who has a special expertise with cars, etc., let me know and it will be placed in the newsletter.  With more and more new members coming aboard, it’s possible we don’t have to look any further than our own backyard.  Right now Les and I are looking for T-bird parts.  Les has a ’57 and ‘61 and I have a ’63.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  Bob Merriman reported there were three students who completed the scholarship applications.  However, Doug Kentfield was the only qualified applicant and the committee recommended to award him a scholarship of $1500.  Ray said there is still money available if the club wants to give some to students from last year who is still attending an auto tech school.

COATS AND APPAREL:  I received an order for two more jackets and the order was placed on May 7 and should have them in approximately three weeks.  We have also placed the order for polo shirts.  Ray is working on getting event t-shirts.

EVENTS:   Several members went to the Nova Club show at Les Schwab on April 29 in Covington.  Craig Chapman received a trophy for best stock for his ’54 Chevy.  Way to go Craig!

Tim Collins, Dan Gilmore, Ray Markley, and Lyle Nokes (I rode along with Lyle) went to the student’s car show at Kent Lake High School on Wednesday, May 16 to promote scholarships.  The principal as well as the Superintendent of the Kent School District welcomed us.  They both said how much they appreciated the support of the Maple Valley Street Rats and the work they do for students.  We also talked to several students who showed a lot of interest in the scholarships as well as our cars.

The Terry Home Car show was wet, but fun was had by all who attended.  Hooray to Lyle Nokes for receiving the most “Luscious Louvers” award.

Anyone that wants to or is planning on attending the Colby run Memorial Day weekend, contact Ray, Teresa, Lyle. or June.  The Lance Lambert Downtown Cruise at the Triple XXX in Issaquah is June 24.  Wouldn’t it be fun to participate as a club?  Also, don’t forget the Cle Elum and Roslyn run in August after our Mt. Si show.

Dan Gilmore is working with Comcast on a commercial for “The Filling Station” in Federal way and passed a sign up sheet at the last meeting for members who have a 50’s car and would want to be in the commercial.

FROM THE PRESIDENT:   How do you like that?  Cruis’in is here!  I’ve had all my old cars out except the 35 Ford, and I’m in the middle of putting the new battery in it now. It’s an old car thing you can’t just put in a battery.  You have to clean everything. And check it out.  This is an un-restored car, but in this case everything was in good condition, except the hold down bracket. I cleaned it good and put a coat of Por 15 on it.  Then I cut the bottom out of a plastic battery case, and used it to protect the Ford metal under the new battery. That old battery was in the car when I bought it in 1995, so I can’t complain that it didn’t last very long.  See you all Friday night at Wal Mart, but first I’m going to take the old Ford out for a spin.

News Flash!!! Free, Free, Free Lunch.  That’s right Tahoma High School Street Rats will buy any and all Maple Valley Street Rats a free lunch if you bring your old car to the Tahoma High School annual car show June 1st. The show is from 9 am to 1 pm. Please tell Ray if you plan on coming. They are reserving parking for us.

50/50 DRAWING:  Won by Lars Kirmser.  Lars took home $65 and the club received $65.  Val Merriman won a scholarship poster for a second drawing held.

NEXT MEETING AGENDA:  Friday nights and Maple Valley Days.

NEXT MEETING:  Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Henry’s Switch Restaurant at Lake Wilderness Golf Course.  The meeting starts promptly at 7:00 p.m.; however, a lot of people show up at 6:00 p.m. to have dinner first.
