July 2007 Newsletter

LAST MEETING: The meeting was held on July 10, 2007 at 7:00 pm   There was a total of 30 members in attendance (including new members).  In addition, there were three guests.  Items discussed were the Treasurer’s Report, Friday Night Cruise Ins, previous and upcoming events, scholarships and the Mt. Si show.

FRIDAY NIGHT CRUISE-INS:   Holding our breath…when it doesn’t seem like it can get any better, it does!  After three Friday’s of rain (one completely rained out), we had more record numbers.  On July 6, the club set another record.  This time, there were 227 cars WITHOUT member cars.  There were some amazing cars that showed up…a million and a half dollar Deusenberg, a Packard Roadster and a 1967 Ford Fairlane with a $35,000 paint job.  This car is going on to Ohio to enter the competition for a Riddler Award.  On Friday, the 13th we had 180 cars.  Less than before but nothing to sneeze at…PLUS Wal-Mart brought out the BBQ and grilled hamburgers and hotdogs…a huge success.  A cameraman from the magazine, Rod & Custom Magazine, was also there taking pictures of cars.  He made the comment to me that our members were humorous and very helpful as well as having a very well organized cruise in.  He asked about the club and I introduced him to Jim Eaton, who told him how we were formed and what we are all about.  Look for pictures and maybe an article about our club in their December 2007 or January 2008 issue.

MT. SI:  It is fast approaching and again calling for help!  Teresa called an activities meeting right after the 7/13 Friday night cruise in.  We need sponsors for trophies.  We have a couple of sponsors whom also purchased trophies for Mt. Si when they were asked for Maple Valley Days, but we still need several more.  From what I understand Ehren Atkinson has again volunteered to do the trophies but may need some help.  If you would like to help him, give him a call.  This year the club doesn’t need to drive dignitaries in the parade.  However, we are being asked to have as many cars in it as possible (for show).  There may be a club trophy as well as an individual trophy given by the Mt. Si Festival committee.  If you want to participate, call Teresa immediately!  Thanks to Terry O’Neal for donating a beautiful leather jacket for one of the raffles, however we need lots more.  If you don’t want to make, purchase an item and you would like to donate, Teresa said she is willing to do the shopping for you.  Let her know.  The next activity meeting will be right after the next Friday night cruise in.

KUDOS:   Thanks to Lyle Nokes, for doing such a great job organizing at Friday nights.  Thanks also to Debbie Veenhuizen for copying all of our event flyers for us whenever we need them.

LEADS & NEEDS:  No leads or needs to report…unless anyone out there knows how to fix a *(&^@# horn that likes to blast every time you turn the wheel.  If anyone has anything they want to place here, let me know.

COATS AND APPAREL:   We finally received the two jackets and the polo shirts that had been ordered.  All have been given with the exception.  If you placed an order and haven’t received them, give me a call and we can make arrangements for you to get them.  We are looking for a place to get the straw hats, hat bands and the static cling decals.  At this time, the prices have been out of sight!  If any of you know of someplace to order them at a decent rate, let me know that too, PLEASE?

EVENTS:   There have been several car shows and more to come!  Terry O’Neal helped at a car show at Lake Sammamish where even though it rained, 175 cars showed.

Jay Atkinson reported that there were 1400-1700 Mustangs at the Bellevue Community College Mustang show.

Dave Michalski reported on Roseburg, Oregon Graffiti Week.  Ray and Vickie Markley, Bob and Val Merriman, Dave and Judy Michalski, and Marcia and I went representing the Street Rats.  We met up with the Chevie Club on several of there events and had a great time!  There was a cruise to some retirement homes and the VA hospital.  To see their faces…PRICELESS!  There was also a 70 mile poker run and several car shows every day.  At their big event, there was over 550 cars and then a huge cruise Saturday night.  We all went to a town called Winston, where adults and kids lined the streets hollering “Burn Em”…so WE DID!!!...or should we say Ray did!  What a blast!  Ray, Vicki, Dave and Judy finished up the weekend on Sunday with a long cruise ending up at the casino.  Judy was the lucky one, walking away with $300.  Good going, Judy!  PS:  Who do you suppose had three flat tires coming home and who ran out of gas right at the pump?  (Someone in a Camero and a GTO)  Hmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!

Gary Parker reported on the Return to Renton event and said there were approximately 319 and was very well organized. They handed over 200 flyers for Mt Si and 400 flyers at the Fircrest show they attended that Sunday.

Steve Holt reported on the benefit car show for the Kent police officer who is terminally ill with cancer.  The show was well attended with 185 cars, including the Corvette Club and motorcycles.  Greg, the police officer, drove his own car to and from the show.  They were able to raise $23,000 to put towards his medical bills and family.

Holy Cow!!!!  Are we going to have to have another new section in the newsletter?  A section called Trophies?  Wouldn’t that be great?  Dave and Judy Michalski won the Sponsor’s Award Trophy at the Lake Sammamish show, Gary Parker and June Farran won the Sponsor’s Choice trophy at the Solid Rock Cruise, and of course, Craig and Gay Chapman won the Oldest trophy at the Maltby Church show, Most Chrome at a show on Father’s Day, and another trophy for his T-Bucket at the Triple XXX Old Rides Car Club Show in Issaquah.  So far this year, he has one 12 trophies for his cars and one for his Dad’s.  Fantastic guys!

On another note...There were several club members who went to the Baloney Show in Issaquah on the 14th.  The club won a trophy for most members present and the lowest of lows happened.  The trophy was stolen!  What a shame that someone has to steal a trophy to make them look good!  It sure would have looked nice sitting on the ledge of the club trailer!  Maybe there will be another time!  I don’t know how many times we have been told how impressive we look, as a group, wearing our member shirts and/or jackets.  Let’s think about having a club member picture taken…maybe after one of our monthly meetings outside the clubhouse?

FROM THE PRESIDENT:   WOW!!! The bunch of us that went to Roseburg to get some sun were sure surprised to hear it stopped raining in Seattle the minute we left and turned sunny and warm. But Roseburg was great. It was hot (top down the whole time); the only bummer was having two blow-outs and a flat tire because of tread separation on the trailer on the way home. We put the spare on 10 miles from Roseburg and good old Les Schwab came out with a couple of tires and got us back on the road outside of Vancouver. He said the trailer factory failed to put heavy duty valve stems on with the heavy duty tires! The kicker is one of the new tires is now flat here at home, it has a screw in it!  Aren’t Friday nights great? Summers half way over. If you haven’t been out you’re missing a great time. With club cars we had close to 250 one night. That’s a record! Mt. Si car show is coming up and the club picnic is in September. Vicki and I have already bought our first club Christmas party gift $19.99 on sale from $49.99. It’s sure to be the best gift at the party. (I think that every year). Remember gifts can’t be over $20 and should be $15 or more. That’s it for now.  See you at the meeting – Ray
