April 2007 Newsletter

LAST MEETING: The meeting was held on April 3, 2007 at 7:00 pm with 44 members present, two guests and three new members.  Reports were given on advertising, activities and scholarships and clothing.  Constitution/By-Law change was discussed, voted on and passed.  The members were informed the club’s bank account was changed from Key Bank to Bank of America for the purpose of better service and cheaper rates.  The change to the Constitution-By-Laws were brought to a vote before the membership and passed unanimously.  The official document will be copied and sent soon.

**IMPORTANT – READ CAREFULLY    The $25 annual membership dues are due May 1.  You can either mail them to Maple Valley Street Rats, Attention Nancy Atkinson or Vicki Markley or pay them at the May 1 meeting.  They will in turn send or give you a written receipt which you need for proof of payment.  According to the Constitution/By-Laws, dues must be paid within the 37-day grace period.  If your dues are received by the club after June 6, they are deemed to be late and membership is to be terminated.

DINNER OUT/EATING OUT Twenty-seven attended lunch at another new place called The Park Place Bar & Grill in Normandy Park on Sunday, March 25.  Members checked out the classic car pictures framed and hung on walls in their lounge.  The Street Rats license plaque has been there also.  The food was good, but again seating arrangement wasn’t the best, however a little better than last month.  If anyone knows of a place they would like to go to, let me know.  April’s eating out will be the last one until our events are complete for the summer.

Craig and Bill suggested that we eat in Carnation for our April get together.  Everyone liked the idea except no one could figure out where in the world Carnation is!  In order to show them we can find them, we it was decided to meet at the Ixtapa Mexican Restaurant, 4522 Tolt Ave, Carnation, WA (425-333-6788) Sunday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m. If anyone wants to meet up somewhere and caravan, call me or Ray.  From what we have been told there is plenty of parking and wouldn’t it be great if we all showed up in our rods?  (My phone number is 206-763-1314 and Ray’s is 425-432-5391)  If you would rather drive on your own…

BOWLING:   We’re headed down the home stretch…almost done and some of the Street rats are in the running for roll-offs.  Debbie V. bowled a 187 in their first game.  Wahoo Debbie!  Can they hold on or can’t they?  Guess what that means…car shows are a comin’!!!!

HOT RODS:   Gary DeLisle got his 1949 Ford finished.  What a beaut.  He brought it to our lunch-out last month and did it shine!  Lars bought a 1972 VW.  Can’t wait to see that one.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  Bob Merriman reported we are on schedule for the scholarships.  We are just waiting for the students to get their applications in.  Two interview meetings have been set up at Glacier Park Middle School on April 25th and 26th.

COATS AND APPAREL:   The last jackets were ordered were received and distributed.  Three more were ordered on April 4th so hope to see that order completed within three weeks or so.  Samples of summer jackets were brought for members to check out.  The majority seemed to prefer the “no collar” jackets and stenciling rather than embroidery to keep the cost down.  We’ll keep checking on those.

We brought in a sample of a red polo shirt to be worn at our events, etc and they can be ordered with or without pockets and/or with or without names.  I’ll have the complete price list at the next meeting.  Also SRP would like to have the money in hand when we give them our order so keep that in mind if and when you give me your order.  Ray passed around the logo that will be on the “MEMBER” t-shirts which can be ordered for $10.  Sign up sheets to order both polo shirts and t-shirts were passed around.  If anyone else would like to order, either call me or Ray or let us know at the next meeting.  We pretty much get a price break for orders of six or more.

June brought in a sample of MVSR magnetic badges and took orders.  They are $10 with one “dangle” hanging on it.  The “dangle” can have your name, car, etc on it.  Talk to June if you would like to place an order.

EVENTS:   Teresa reported that we need 10 convertibles for the Maple Valley Parade to carry dignitaries for their 10th anniversary of Maple Valley Days.  Anyone out there willing and able to drive their convertibles for the parade?  The Markleys, Nokes,  Merriman, Collins’ have volunteered so far.  We need others!!!!  Still need volunteers for the Friday night cruise in and both car shows.  Who can help with the trailer, gate, set up, parking, clean up, etc?  Get a hold of Teresa or Lyle Nokes to let them know when, what and where you can do help.  If we can all do at least one thing at one or more of our events, we “have it made in the shade”!  Check out the  list of upcoming events in our website.

The trailer work party is scheduled at Ray’s house on Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m. RAIN or SHINE!!!  Any and all help will be appreciated!  For more information, contact Lyle Nokes.

Bill Speer reported on the Cruiz’n the Harbor in Oak Harbor on March 31.  Weather turned out to be SUNNY and the Street Rats had 8 people in attendance with three cars.  Two of the three cars won trophies…Gary and June and Ray.  Way to go!!!!  June distributed our event flyers to most, if not all, of the cars there.

Even though it rained up until about an hour before, the “Classy Chassis Show ‘n’ Shine” had about 30 cars at Bernie and The Boys in Burien last Saturday.   Ray and Vicki Markley, Dave and Judy Michalski, Lyle Nokes, Marsh and me were all there.  Yes, I took the Chev out even though it still looked like rain. Ray took his Camaro…with the top down!  Of course, we had to eat their hot dogs and hamburgers!  Ken and Larkin showed up towards the end with their street car.  Our event flyers were distributed there also.

**IMPORTANT – PARTS NEEDED:   Ehren Atkinson is still in need of car parts for trophy makings.

NEW MEMBERS:  WELCOME to new members Vicki Salick, Puyallup and John Bulow, Renton.  Vicki has a 1956 Chev Bel-Air 2 dr. post and John has a 1951 Ford Victoria with a 350 Chev engine.  Hmmm. . . .  do Chevs out weigh the Fords?

FROM THE PRESIDENT: Spring has sprung!  I see old cars on the road every time I go out. I usually wave at them and sometimes they wave back. An Interesting thing happened the other day when I had the Camaro out. A guy almost offered me $140,000 for it, honest I have a witness. Dave Michalski was with me. We were checking Covington out for cruise-in signage. He insisted he wanted to buy it, but of course when he heard the price, he said don’t call him he’ll call me.

I especially want to welcome all the new members into the club. Some of them are friends of Larry’s, but we shouldn’t hold that against them. New members have to wait a year before they can hold office, but the By-Laws give new members the right to vote from the moment they are voted into the club. You are welcome to be as active in the club as you would like, please see me, Ray Markley, President, or Teresa Collins, Activity Director, if you would like to be a part of planning and running club activities.  Some of our most active members are new members as you can see by the turn out at club events. Besides our Friday Night cruise-ins, Maple Valley Days and Mount Si Festival car shows, club functions include the club picnic, Christmas party and after the car season is over a bowling league (we terrorize the Chevy club) and once a month dinners out.   That’s all for now – Keep on cruising – Ray

50/50 DRAWING:  Won by Sara Arends.  Sara took home $71 and the club received $71.

NEXT MEETING AGENDA:  Friday nights, Maple Valley Days, badges, and apparel

NEXT MEETING:  Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at Henry’s Switch Restaurant at Lake Wilderness Golf Course.  The meeting starts promptly at 7:00 p.m.; however, a lot of people show up at 6:00 p.m. to have dinner first.
